The recently released update 1806 for Configuration Manager Current Branch (build 1806) now introduces the ability to enable PXE without the need for the WDS role to be installed. You may be asking yourself, what are the benefits to this – but it comes down to more flexibility when building out your Configuration Manager infrastructure. With this feature, you could now deploy PXE enabled distribution points to other Operating Systems that did not support the WDS feature like Windows client or Server Core.
To enable this feature, from the Configuration Manager 1806 console:
- Navigate to Administration > Distribution Points
- Right-click on the distribution point you’d like to enable this feature on and select Properties
- From the Properties page, click on the PXE tab and check Enable a PXE responder without Windows Deployment Services
You should now be able to PXE without the need for the WDS role to be installed.
